Between Ontario and Quebec, the Abitibi Greenstone Belt is a 2.7-billion-year-old natural archive. Formed in the Archean, it preserves rocks that tell the story of our planet’s dawn.
Here, komatiites, ultramafic lavas that flowed at extreme temperatures, created unique textures like spinifex, with elongated olivine crystals arranged in mesmerizing radial patterns. But the magic of Abitibi goes beyond the rocks:
🌌 Northern Lights over gold deposits: On winter nights, when temperatures drop to -30°C, the sky lights up with green and blue curtains dancing above the mines, creating a breathtaking scene.
⛏️ Mining that withstands time (and cold): This region is one of Canada’s largest gold producers, with operations facing extreme conditions. Frozen ground, glacial temperatures, and Arctic logistics make mining here a true challenge of engineering and resilience.
❄️ Speaking of extreme cold… We know that equipment needs to be as resilient as the rocks they extract.
The geology of Abitibi reminds us: beauty and strength are forged together, revealing enduring stories beneath the earth.
